Pain Relief through Video Games
I’ve lived with chronic pain for over 8 years now and I have found in addition to medicines and rest, mental distractions such as video games are a GREAT way to provide temporary relief from pain. Here’s what I’ve found…
I’ve Googled a few quick articles on this:
The concept is this: Playing games can lead to releasing endorphins in the brain, which provide a sense of pleasure that overshadows the pain on a subconscious level. In short, they are a great distraction from the pain that engages your sense of sight, sound and touch (when using a controller or mouse/keyboard).
I am an avid PC gamer. I own between 40-50 PC games and have between 10-15 installed at any one time. The key is fining a game that I am genuinely interested in. I can’t find relief from just any game. Sometimes I will load up around 5 or 6 games within 10 minutes and still not find one that’s engaging. I like creative games where I can make my own characters, armies and buildings. So for me, strategy games and role playing games are great for me.
If you are interested in trying some games for free to see if this works for you, PC Gamer magazine’s website has an entire column devoted to free-to-play games that you might find interesting:http://www.pcgamer.com/category/free-pc-games/
Also, if you are a PC Gamer like me, you should check out Steam which offers downloadable games for sale and often runs VERY EXCELENT sales such as 80% off on major games:
Finally, if you want to try some browser based games or Flash games, Kongregate is an awesome place to start:http://www.kongregate.com/
Hope this helps!
